The Affordable Housing Project Final Report is now available. [PDF]

August 22, 07 – Media Release

Salmon Arm Economic Development Society is pleased to announce the appointment of Geri Byrne as the Coordinator for the Affordable Housing Project. The two summer students, Trinity Penner and Adam Cseke, have coordinated the affordable housing project thus far and are planning to present to city council on August 27 at 2:30 pm their recommendations. The public is encouraged to attend.

In April 2007 the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society issued their five year strategic plan, which reflects a culmination of key inventory economic development activities, challenges and issues that have been openly reviewed with and prioritized by key community stakeholders and elected officials.

The lack of affordable housing is greatly affecting the other strategic economic drivers such as the business attraction and retention of individuals within Salmon Arm and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.
With the successful formation of the Affordable Housing Committee, Geri will start her new role in coordinating the Governance and Land and Development Committees at the beginning of September.

Geri was previously the Self Employment Coordinator for Community Futures and brings a solid business background and understanding of the community to the role.

The Economic Development Society’s two summer students are continuing to research the issue of home affordability in Salmon Arm. As of this past week their summer research has entered into its final stages and the initial implementation stages of the project have begun.

The students are in the process of drafting their final report. The report will contain past, current and projected housing trends for the Shuswap area, research findings, and recommendations of how to deal with the issue of affordable housing in Salmon Arm. The Affordable Housing Final Report is expected to be completed and presented to City Council on Monday, August 27, 2007. It will then be made available to the public.

The implementation stage of the AHP focuses on the establishment of an Affordable Housing Committee, securing seed capital, and the development of affordable housing units in Salmon Arm. We are in the process of formalizing an Affordable Housing Committee, and have secured $5,000 in funding from the Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union. We will continue to apply for additional financial support from other provincial and federal organizations. Once these two important processes are complete, the realization of affordable housing in Salmon Arm will be one step closer.

We would like to express our gratitude to the Salmon Arm media community for their efforts in helping raise community awareness around the issue of home affordability in Salmon Arm and the surrounding Columbia Shuswap Regional District. We encourage public inquiry via telephone, email or stop in at our new office location at the Old Courthouse for those individuals who have any questions/comments regarding the AHP or affordable housing issues. We encourage the public to post their thoughts, comments and ideas on our blog site www.saaffordablehousing.blogspot.com, participate in our online polls, as well as to visit the Economic Development Society’s website www.salmonarmedc.com.

We would also like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the City of Salmon Arm for their in-kind contributions to the AHP – for the use of the City Council Chambers and their information resources.

More Money in your Jeans Marketing Campaign ‘fit perfect’ winning a Provincial Award...

Jeans

The Salmon Arm Economic Development Society (SAEDS) is invited to Ft. St. John to the Economic Development Association of BC (EDABC) conference and Neil Babiy, Economic Development Officer, receives an award. As a result the SAEDS and the City of Salmon Arm can boast itself as having the province of BC’s best marketing campaign.

Responding to the skilled labour shortage and the increasing cost of doing business in markets such as Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and the Lower Mainland, Salmon Arm Economic Development encourages business with branch plant expansion plans to ‘try it on for size’.

Select businesses in Alberta were sent an actual pair of jeans promoting the competitive business and life style advantages of Salmon Arm. The community offers labour, infrastructure, access to markets as well as the casual and affordable lifestyle many business owners and employees are looking for.

Recipients of the jeans were directed to a specifically designed website; www.moremoneyinyourjeans.com that included links to the community profile, and interactive business form and a fully integrated database to track submissions and respond to specific inquiries. A picture postcard of the jeans was also sent to a larger group of businesses directing them to the moremoneyinyourjeans.com website.

Much like a pair of jeans, Salmon Arm is a practical, hardworking place. The economy is deeply rooted with diversity including forestry and small manufacturing sectors. The Economic Development Society is leveraging the existing market condition and employment skill sets to further build a sustainable local economy.

As a result of the campaign, manufacturers who have recently established branch plants or new start ups here include Doepker, SA Plastics and ADAM Integrated. These three companies represent millions of dollars of direct (and indirect) investment and at least 200 skilled and unskilled jobs.

Western Economic Diversification and the City of Salmon Arm helped fund this SAEDS initiative while local talent of Louise Wallace, Mediability Corporate Communications owner and Warren Welter, Creatability owner, developed the award winning communication and collateral materials.
